Ioan Pop
Ioan Pop ( Hungarian János Pap ; born October 24, 1954 in Cluj-Napoca ) is a former Romanian fencer and current sports official.
Athletic career
Ioan Pop began fencing at the age of eleven in his hometown of Cluj. Two years later he became Romanian champion in his age group. At the age of 17 he became a member of the Romanian national fencing team, to which he belonged until 1986, and in 1973 he moved to the capital club Steaua Bucharest . He took part in the Olympic Games three times . In 1976 he won the bronze medal with the team ( Dan Irimiciuc , Marin Musta Mustă , Corneliu Marin and Alexandru Nilca ) in Montreal . At his next participation in 1980 in Moscow , he finished fifth with the team. Four years later, in 1984 in Los Angeles , he won his second bronze medal together with Mustață, Alexandru Chiculiță , Marin and Vilmoș Szabo .
Pop was also able to win medals several times with the saber fencing team at fencing world championships. Twice he was vice world champion with the team, 1974 with Dan Irimiciuc, Corneliu Marin and Alexandru Nilca, and 1977 with Irimiciuc, Marin and Nilca. In 1975 the Romanian saber team finished third with Irimiciuc, Marin, Pop and Mihai Frunza .
Professional
In 1973 Pop graduated from high school and studied at the Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj . He then trained at the Romanian national fencing school in Bucharest . After finishing his active sports career, he started working as a coach. In 1990 he was elected General Secretary of the Romanian Fencing Federation Federația Română de Scrimă (FRS). In 1994 he became national coach in Tunisia and brought the fencer Henda Zaouali to world class level. Since 1997 Ioan Pop has been the international sports director of the Fédération Internationale d'Escrime (FIE).
Ioan Pop has been honored many times in Romania, for example with the titles “Master Emeritus of Sports” and “Coach Emeritus”, and is a member of the Hall of Fame of the FIE World Fencing Federation.
