Ion Popescu-Sibiu (* 1901 in Sibiu ; † September 11, 1974 in Bucharest ) was a Romanian doctor , physician , psychiatrist and psychoanalyst . In Romania, Popescu-Sibiu was one of the founders of psychoanalysis by Sigmund Freud .

Life and work

Ion Popescu-Sibiu had studied psychology in Bucharest and Iași and had become a military doctor . He began to write to Freud and a correspondence developed. However, both correspondence is considered lost. In 1927, Popescu-Sibiu published his doctoral thesis at the University of Alexandru Ioan Cuza Iași on Freudian teaching. Five years later it received an award from the Romanian Academy of Sciences for its second enlarged edition (1932) . The new edition comprised 3,000 copies and for the first time included a “medical-psychological specialist dictionary” in Romanian in its appendix. That was at a time when there were barely more than 10 books in Romanian devoted to psychology, psychotherapy, forensic medicine, and dream research. Popescu-Sibiu's work became the standard work in Romania in the field of theory and practice of psychoanalysis and the most important source of information on Freudianism .

In 1935 he co-founded the "Romanian Journal of Psychoanalysis" ( Revista Română de Psihanaliză ). He also took part in various international congresses before the war, including the Psychotherapists Congress in Paris in 1937. His work was reprinted again and again until 1947, which is why he was regarded as the psychoanalyst in Romania in the interwar period.

After 1945 Popescu-Sibiu distanced himself from Freudian pansexualism and turned to neo-psychoanalysis . Together with Constantin Vlad, the special commissioner for minority problems in the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Romania, Popescu-Sibiu became an officially recognized pioneer of psychoanalysis in Romania. With Vlad he was also one of the co-founders of the Romanian "Society for Psychopathology and Psychiatry".
