The Ionoscopiformes are an extinct order of the bony fish (Osteichthyes). They lived from the Lower Jurassic to the Upper Cretaceous .
features
The Ionoscopiformes had a V-shaped rostral bone that tapered to the side like a horn. A special skin bone ("dermosphenotic bone"), which was on the top of the head behind the eye sockets, formed part of the skull. An outgrowth of this bone was part of the eye sockets and contained a sensory trough , as well as another special bone ("supraotic bone") on the back center of the brain skull that occurs in extinct fish from the subclass of the new fins. The parietal bone was relatively long, longer or as long as it was wide. The eyes were protected by a wreath of bones. The gill cover was long, narrow and crescent-shaped. The fish had numerous neural processes (supraneuralia).
External system
Together with the extinct bony fish order Parasemionotiformes , the bowfins (Amiiformes), which are also extinct except for one species, the North American bald pike ( Amia calva ), and the real bony fish (Teleostei), which make up the largest part of today's fish fauna, form the Ionoscopiformes the taxon Halecomorphi , which is the sister group of the Ginglymodi (bone pike).
