Systematics

Within the genus of morning glories ( Ipomoea ), the species was classified for a long time in the series Anisomerae in the section Eriospermum of the subgenus Eriospermum. However, this series has proven to be polyphyletic and was therefore disbanded by Daniel F. Austin in 1997. He placed the species in the Eriospermum series.
