Irena Grafenauer (born June 1, 1957 in Ljubljana , Slovenia ) is a Slovenian flutist .

Life

Irena Grafenauer's musical training began at the age of eight. After graduating from the Music Academy in Ljubljana in 1974, she studied with Boris Campa , Karlheinz Zöller and Aurèle Nicolet . Since October 1987 she has been teaching as a full professor at the Mozarteum in Salzburg.

From 1977 to 1987 Grafenauer was the principal flutist of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra . She has been a soloist since 1987. So far she has worked with well-known orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic , the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra , the German Chamber Philharmonic , the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields . In 1995 she was a guest at the Salzburg Festival , in 1996 she toured Europe, Japan, Taiwan, Korea and the USA.

Grafenauer is committed u. a. for the promotion of young musical talents in the "Music Lessons Exchange", a project of the Mozarteum Salzburg.

In 2002 Grafenauer contracted chronic myeloid leukemia with the Philadelphia chromosome .

Awards

Irena Grafenauer won several international competitions, including first prize in Geneva and Belgrade (both in 1974) and in Munich (1979). Her more than 20 recordings with Philips have received several awards. In 2005 she was awarded the Prešeren Prize , the highest cultural award in Slovenia.
