The Iriarteeae are a tribe of the palm family (Arecaceae). The stilt roots are characteristic of the group. The representatives are wrongly ascribed the ability to wander over the ground with the help of the stilt roots.

features

The representatives of the Iriarteeae are slim to robust, upright palms and form stilt roots . You are monocial . The mostly few leaves are pinnate, the leaflets are torn, leaf veins and larger leaf veins lead radially away from the base. The leaves are often divided into many segments lengthways. The leaf sheaths form a crown shaft. The inflorescences are unisexual or bisexual, in the form of an ear or branched one to two times. They carry a cover sheet and several mostly large bracts on the peduncle. The flowers are in triads or groups derived from them. The female flowers have imbricate petals with valvate tips; or the petals are already open early in development. The gynoeceum has one to three ovules . The fruit is mostly solitary. Multi-seeded fruits are lobed.

distribution

The representatives occur in Central and South America.

Systematics

The Iriarteeae as defined by Dransfield et al. (2008) are identified as natural relatives ( Monophylum ) in all studies . They are the most basic group of the Arecoideae , so the sister group of all other Arecoideae; or they are the sister group of the so-called "core arecoids".

Five genera are counted to the tribe, the relationships between which have not yet been clarified:

The old division of the tribe into two sub-tribes, Wettiniinae with Wettinia and Iriarteinae with the other genera, could not be maintained.
