Irit Amiel , a native of Irena Librowicz ( Hebrew עירית עמיאל; * May 5, 1931 in Częstochowa ), is a Polish - Israeli poet , writer and translator who writes in both Polish and Hebrew and translates from both into both languages.

Life

Amiel was born in 1931 to a Jewish family in Częstochowa, where she spent her childhood. In 1941 she lived in the local ghetto , from which she escaped in September 1942, while her parents Leon and Natalia Librowicz perished in the Treblinka extermination camp in 1942 . Amiel hid under cover names in Częstochowa, in the country around Częstochowa and then with her uncle's family in Warsaw . After the suppression of the Warsaw Uprising in 1944, she stayed in the village of Pocieszna Górka near Częstochowa and returned to her hometown after the end of the Second World War , where she first attended high school for a short time, but then emigrated from Poland at the end of 1945 with the help of the Bricha organization . She reached Palestine in December 1947 via refugee camps in Germany ( Biberach an der Riss ), Italy ( Turin ) and Cyprus . She lived in the kibbutz Bet HaSchita and from 1949 in the kibbutz Palmachim . There she met Chuzy Amiel, whom she married in 1953. In the following years she worked as a civil servant and jewelry seller.

In the late 1970s, Amiel studied philology , history and literary history at the Open University of Israel in Raʿanana . From 1981 to 1985 she studied translation studies at Beit Berl and began to translate literary texts from Hebrew into Polish and from Polish into Hebrew.

In 1994 Amiel published her first own volume of poetry in Hebrew. In the same year a Polish translation was published.

She lives in Tel Aviv .
