Irving Hexham (born April 14, 1943 in Whitehaven , Cumbria , England ) is a British - Canadian religious scholar . He is Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Calgary . Hexham is married to Professor Emeritus of Anthropology Karla Poewe and has two children, Jeremy and Jane. Together with his wife, he has published numerous scientific articles.

Hexham is an internationally recognized expert on research into the so-called New Religious Movements .

Life

After graduating from secondary school, Hexham made a successful technical training as a gas fitter from 1958–1964, followed by work as a skilled worker at the North Western Gas Board . During this time he was involved as a union representative . Through his professional diploma and additional educational courses, he achieved a university entrance qualification and began a correspondence course at the University of Lancaster in 1967 in religious studies , history and philosophy . In 1973, through the subsequent "post-graduate" course, he obtained a Master of Arts with distinction in religious studies and theology at the University of Bristol . In 1975 he completed his studies in history and anthropology in Bristol with a "Masters".

academic career

Hexham was from 1974 to 1977 lecturer at "Bishop Lonsdale College" at the University of Derby in England. There he also worked as a lecturer at the "Open University Derby" from 1975 to 1977. Hexham then moved to Canada and from 1977 to 1980 took the position of Assistant Professor at Regent College in Vancouver. In 1980 he took a lectureship in general religion at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg which he followed until 1984. From 1984 to 1988 he was offered an assistant professorship in religious studies at the University of Calgary . In 1988 he was appointed Associate Professor in Calgary, and in 1992 he was appointed Full Professor of Religious Studies.

Memberships

Hexham is a Fellow of the Royal Anthropological Institute and became a member of various professional associations including the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion , American Academy of Religion , the Berlin Society for Missionary History , of which he was a founding member alongside Ulrich van der Heyden . These memberships also include memberships in societies for African ethnology and religious studies. Hexham has also been elected as a member of the Center for Military and Strategic Studies at the University of Calgary.

Research and Teaching

Hexham specializes in research on cults and new religious movements , neo-paganism, the new rights and political religions in Germany. History of religion, sociology of religion and methods in the study of religions and the philosophy of religion. Religious history of Africa and especially the religion and society in South Africa. Furthermore general theology and political science. In the spectrum of Christianity he teaches and researches culture, mission and society, ethics, fundamentalism as well as evangelical and charismatic communities.
