Irving Saraf

Irving Saraf (born July 7, 1932 in Poland , † December 26, 2012 in San Francisco , California ) was a film director , film producer , cameraman and film editor .

Life

Saraf grew up in Israel and immigrated to the United States in 1952. He studied film at UCLA , which he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts . In the mid-1960s he began making films, often taking on directing, camera, production and editing in one person. In the 1970s he worked for Saul Zaentz's film production company , where he directed the post-production of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest . In 1991 he was awarded an Oscar for the documentary In the Shadow of the Stars . Three years later he received an Emmy for talking to crazy women .

Saraf was a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and taught for several years as a professor at San Francisco State University .

Saraf died at the age of 80 after suffering from ALS for three years . He was married to the filmmaker Allie Light for the second time . His son is the film producer Peter Saraf .
