Irwin I. Shapiro

Irwin Ira Shapiro (born October 10, 1929 in New York City ) is an American astrophysicist . Since 1982 he has been a professor at Harvard University . From 1982 to 2004 he was the director of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics .

Life

Irwin Shapiro was born in New York City in 1929 . He first studied mathematics at Cornell University , then physics at Harvard University , where he also received his doctorate. In 1954 he joined the Lincoln Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and became Professor of Physics there in 1967. In 1982 he accepted a position at Harvard University and at the same time became director of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics .

research

Shapiro's work includes research in the fields of geophysics (exploring the structure of the Earth's core ) and astrophysics .

An important area of ​​work was tests of general relativity , which were carried out in the solar system . The Shapiro delay , discovered by Shapiro in 1964 , was named after him, as was the asteroid (3832) Shapiro . More recently, he has worked on gravitational lenses and estimates of the age of the universe .

Honors

In 1969 Shapiro was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , 1974 to the National Academy of Sciences and 1998 to the American Philosophical Society . He won the William Bowie Medal in 1994 and the Charles A. Whitten Medal in 1991 , both awarded by the American Geophysical Union . For 2013 he was awarded the Einstein Prize of the American Physical Society , of which he had been a fellow since 1975.
