William Bowie Medal
The William Bowie Medal is a geoscientific award and is the highest honor given by the American Geophysical Union (AGU).
The medal, usually briefly referred to as the Bowie Medal , is awarded annually. The award honors scientists for outstanding contributions to fundamental geophysics and unselfish collaboration in research. The latter is one of the defining leitmotifs of the AGU.
The medal was introduced in 1939 on the initiative of the then (eighth) AGU President Richard Field in honor of William Bowie (1872-1940), the first AGU President from 1919 to 1921. In 1939, he was also the first winner.
