Adam Marian Dziewoński (born November 15, 1936 in Lemberg , Poland , † March 1, 2016 in Cambridge (Massachusetts) ) was a Polish geophysicist and seismologist .

Scientific stations

Dziewoński grew up in Poland, where he studied geophysics at the University of Warsaw , which he graduated in 1960. He then moved to Krakow , where he obtained a doctorate in technical sciences in 1965 at the Akademia Górniczo-Hutnicza (Academy of Mining and Metallurgy). Then Dziewoński went to the United States , first to Dallas and later to Harvard University . From 1976 to 1994 he was Professor of Geology in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences , of which he was Chairman in the mid-1980s. From 1994 Dziewoński held the Frank B. Baird, Jr. professorship in the same department.

Research content

In his scientific career, Adam Dziewoński dealt with the internal structure of the earth and with his research contributed significantly to today's understanding of the earth's interior. One of his early achievements was the development of the Centroid Moment Tensor Catalog , a catalog that compiles the focus mechanisms of major earthquakes and is one of the most widely used standard seismological tools in the world.

One of Dziewoński's best-known achievements was the creation of the PREM Earth Reference Model in 1981 together with Don L. Anderson . The model summarized the changes in seismic velocities , density , pressure and other parameters as a function of depth, and is used up to the present day.

Dziewoński also paid particular attention to the investigation of anisotropy effects in seismology, i.e. the directional dependence of seismic velocities. Investigations of this kind have recently led to new insights into the nature and development of the inner core of the earth .

Awards (selection)

Adam Dziewoński was honored with numerous honorary memberships, prizes and awards for his research work and for his outstanding contributions to the understanding of the earth. B .:
