Raymond Hide (born May 17, 1929 in Doncaster , † September 6, 2016 ) was a British geophysicist .

Life

Hide acquired in 1950 at the Manchester University a Bachelor in Physics and in 1953 at Caius College of the University of Cambridge a Ph.D. in geophysics . He then worked as a research assistant at the Yerkes Observatory at the University of Chicago (United States) and as a researcher at the Atomic Energy Research Establishment in Harwell (United Kingdom). In 1957 he received a position as a lecturer in physics at King's College, University of Durham (now Newcastle University ). In 1958, Hide married Ann License; the couple has three children. In 1961, Hide became Professor of Geophysics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge , Massachusetts . In 1967 he moved to the UK Meteorological Office in Bracknell , whose Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory - Hide was the founder and director - later transferred to the University of Oxford , where Hide became Professor of Physics in 1990. In 1994 he retired , but in 2000 he took over the leadership of a research group at the Faculty of Mathematics at Imperial College London .

Act

In his more than 200 scientific publications, Hide was able to make important contributions to numerous areas of geophysics (including geomagnetism , meteorology , geodesy or oceanography ), planetology and geophysical fluid dynamics , especially magnetohydrodynamics . His work on rotating liquids was able to provide important insights into flow phenomena in the atmosphere, in oceans, but also inside planets, where magnetic fields are generated by a self-propelled magnetohydrodynamic dynamo.

Awards (selection)

Hide held honorary doctorates following universities: University of Cambridge (1969), University of Leicester (1985), University of Manchester (UMIST, 1994) and University of Paris (1995).
