Stanley R. Hart

Stanley Robert Hart (born June 20, 1935 in Swampscott , Massachusetts ) is an American geologist and geochemist .

Hart studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a bachelor's degree in geology in 1956 and at Caltech with a master's degree in geochemistry in 1957. In 1960, he received his doctorate in geochemistry from MIT. After that he was from 1961 at the Carnegie Institution in Washington DC in the department of terrestrial magnetism. From 1975 to 1989 he was Professor of Geology and Geochemistry at MIT and then Senior Scientist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution .

He dealt with the application of isotope chemistry for age determination in geology, the geochemical evolution of the earth's mantle and oceanic lithosphere and the geochemistry of the strontium, neodymium and lead isotopes in volcanic rocks. He also dealt with the long-term behavior of the chemical composition of the oceans due to their interaction with the oceanic crust and the experimental determination of fundamental geochemical properties such as distribution coefficients between mineral and melt in silicates and solid-state diffusion rates. In 1968, together with John S. Steinhart , he published the so-called Steinhart-Hart equation , which describes a relationship between temperature and electrical resistance in thermistors (NTC) used as temperature sensors .

In 1992 he received the Goldschmidt Medal of the Geochemical Society, of which he was president from 1985 to 1987. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences , the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , Fellow of the European Association of Geochemistry, the Geochemical Society, the American Geophysical Union, and the Geological Society of America.

In 2008 he was awarded the Arthur L. Day Prize for establishing the new discipline of chemical geodynamics, the use of chemical signals and isotopes from rocks connected to the Earth's mantle to map and describe the dynamic development of the Earth's interior. In 1997 he received the Harry Hess Medal from the American Geophysical Union. For 2016 he was awarded the William Bowie Medal .

1970 to 1972 he was co-editor of the Review of Geophysics and 1971 to 1976 of Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta and from 1975 of Physics of Earth and Planetary Interiors. In 1975/76 he was chairman of the US National Committee for Geochemistry.

He has been married since 1980 and has three children.
