Marcel Nicolet
Marcel Nicolet , from 1987 Baron Nicolet (born February 26, 1912 in Basse-Bodeux near Liège , Ardennes , Belgium ; † October 8, 1996 in Uccle / Ukkel near Brussels ) was a Belgian geo- and astrophysicist .
Life
He was the son of the brewer Alfred Nicolet and Léopoldine Vauchel. Nicolet first began studying ancient Greek , Latin and French literature . In 1930 he decided to study mathematics at the Université de Liège . There he made his master's degree in physics in 1934 and was awarded a Ph.D. PhD and later qualified as a professor . In 1934 he went as an assistant to the Institut royal météorologique de Belgique (IRM) and later became head of the Department of Radiation (Department of Thermodynamics ). Since 1976 he has been head of the Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy in Brussels.
In 1945 he put forward an early theory about the formation of the layers of the earth's ionosphere . From 1957 to 1958 he was Secretary General of the governing body for the International Geophysical Year , the world's most important research initiative of the 20th century. The Belgian King Baudouin I therefore elevated him to the Belgian hereditary nobility of baron in 1987 . Considering his achievement, he became a member of the scientific academies of Belgium, France ( Académie des sciences ) and USA and received the Guggenheim (1963), Hopkins (1965) and Bowie (1985) prizes / medals.
Nicolet married Alice Delvenne on September 21, 1938 in Fossé (Ardennes).
Memberships
He was a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences and Fine Arts of Belgium , the US National Academy of Sciences (1972) and a Fellow of the British Royal Astronomical Society . A detailed interview in WMO Bulletin (1990) gives a detailed overview of his scientific career and his place in the history of the International Science Council , of which he was also a member.
