Johannes Geiss

Johannes Geiss (born September 4, 1926 in Stolp ; † January 30, 2020 in Bern ) was a German-Swiss physicist .

Life

Geiss studied physics in Göttingen , where he in 1953 with a thesis on isotopic analysis of "ordinary lead" doctorate . He then conducted research in the fields of geochronology at the University of Bern and the University of Chicago . From 1958 to 1959, Geiss was an Associate Professor at the University of Miami and researched the Earth's climate history. In 1960 he returned to the University of Bern, where he was full professor for 31 years until 1991 and director of the Physics Institute from 1966 to 1989. From 1995 to 2002 Geiss was Co-Director at the International Space Science Institute in Bern. In 1981 he was naturalized in Switzerland.

In the 1960s he was the first to provide the composition of noble gases in the solar wind and was scientifically active on five Apollo missions. Together with Hubert Reeves, Geiss determined the cosmic abundance of deuterium and calculated the baryonic density of 0.2 atoms per cubic meter.
