Isidor Kiefer ( May 26, 1871 in Worms - January 27, 1962 in New York ) was a Jewish machine tool manufacturer and the last chairman of a Jewish community ( Kehillah ) in Worms.

Life

Kiefer was born on May 26, 1871 in Worms. In 1924, under Kiefer's leadership, the Israelite community developed a museum exhibition in the synagogue that he had planned, the exhibits and Judaica of which went back to 1914. Kiefer's work in Worms contributed to the fact that the Jewish community in Worms was able to integrate and establish itself, which was also expressed in the fact that all three established denominations took part in the consecration of the memorial to the soldiers who died in World War I.

As a result of the pogrom night on November 10, 1938, the Worms synagogue was burned down; The exhibition that Kiefer had erected was almost completely destroyed. However, shortly before he emigrated to the USA in 1933, Kiefer succeeded in making at least an inventory of the holdings.

Kiefer was involved in the reconstruction of the burned down Worms synagogue, which was decided in 1956 and successfully completed on December 3, 1961 with international attention.

The activities carried out during his lifetime have an impact far beyond Kiefer's death. In 2002, for example, a separate volume was published in the Aschkenas , in which the museum holdings of the destroyed synagogue recorded by Kiefer are reproduced.

Isidor Kiefer died on January 27, 1962 in New York City .
