The castle is an unadorned four-wing complex with a square inner courtyard. The mighty gate tower with a turret in the north wing towers over the other buildings. In the center of the complex is the former office and tenant house of today's domain. According to building inscriptions , the north and east wings were built in 1649. In the 18th century, the representative two-storey central wing facing the Weser was built with two corner projections . To the south of the castle on the Weser is a former landscape park of the castle and to the north is the Grohnder ferry . The entire castle and park area is surrounded by a stone wall.

history

Grohnde Castle, engraving by Matthäus Merian (1654)

A previous building as a moated castle dates back to around 1300. In the possession of the Guelphs since 1408/09 , the complex was mostly pledged until the 17th century. A three-storey extension was built between 1557 and 1559, although it is not known whether the medieval foundation walls were included. Later the war bishop Georg von Holle expanded the castle further. Before and after him, those from Munchhausen sat on the property. The last lien holder was Statius von Münchhausen , who exercised the office of Drosten . In 1619 the fiefdom was withdrawn and the Grohnde office was established, which had its seat in the castle until the 19th century.
