The Islam in New Zealand is a relatively small and new religious community.

The first Muslim migrants were Chinese prospectors in the 1870s. Some Muslim immigrants from India and political refugees from communist Eastern Europe (from Albania and what was then Yugoslavia ) settled in the years 1900 to 1960. In the 1990s, many more Muslim immigrants joined them.

The first Islamic organization, the New Zealand Muslim Association , was founded in Auckland in 1950 . They built the first Islamic house in 1959. In 1979 they built the first mosque in all of New Zealand .

In 1979 the first nationwide Islamic organization, the Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand , was protected by law. Mazhar Krasniqi , born in Pristina , Kosovo in 1931 , was the first president. He headed the New Zealand Muslim Association in the 1970s and 1980s. On December 31, 2002, the Governor General of New Zealand presented him with an Award for Special Merit, which he received on April 4, 2003 in Wellington.

The Muslim Association of Canterbury was founded in 1977. Between 1984 and 1985 she built the Al Noor Mosque in Christchurch , the first mosque on the South Island .

Today over 36,000 Muslims live in New Zealand . Many are immigrants and refugees, plus a few thousand converts.

On March 15, 2019, an attack on two mosques in Christchurch killed 41 people in the Al Noor Mosque and another seven Muslims in the Linwood Islamic Center .
