Ismail Alijewitsch Berdijew ( Russian Исмаил Алиевич Бердиев ;. Scientific transliteration Ismail Alievič Berdiev , often in the form of the name Ismail Berdiyev , in balkarischer Karachay-language Бердилени Алиини джашы Исмаил-хаджи; born 17th February 1954 in the village Uchkeken in Rajon Malokaratschajewski , Karatschai- Circassia ) is a leading Islamic clergyman in the North Caucasus .

biography

Berdyev has been chairman of the Coordination Center for Muslims in the North Caucasus and the Mufti of the Karachay-Cherkessia Republic and the Stavropol region since 1989 . He is also a member of the Council for Cooperation with Religious Associations under the President of the Russian Federation (Russian Совет по взаимодействию с религиозными объединениями) and of the Interreligious Council of Russia (Mezhreta Rossiinogo Soviet).

He is a member of the Supreme Religious Council of the Caucasus Peoples .

He completed his theological training at the Mir-i-Arab Medrese in Bukhara and the Islamic University in Tashkent and studied at the al-Azhar University in Cairo . After completing his studies, he became the imam of a mosque in his home village Utschkeken.

He is married and has two daughters.

Genital mutilation

Berdyev is of the opinion that circumcision of women and children is by no means harmful to health. It would just "calm female lust a little," he said. “It would be good if this were done on all women. Then there would be no depravity in the world. ”Berdyev emphasized that circumcision is not a tradition of Islam, but it is effective as a remedy against“ sexual immorality ”.
