Israel Burstein

Israel Burstein , also Israel Bursztyn , (born 1891 in Nadwórna , Austria-Hungary ; died 1951 in Israel ) was an Austro-Israeli Hebraist .

Life

Israel Burstein studied Hebrew Studies at the University of Vienna and received her doctorate with a thesis on the Hebrew language. The revised dissertation Complete Grammar of the Old and New Hebrew Language was very critically reviewed by Walter Baumgartner and Eduard König .

After Austria's annexation in 1938, Burstein had to emigrate to Palestine in 1939 . There he worked in Wa'ad HaLaschon , the committee for the modernization of the Hebrew language. His main work Torat ha-hegeh: ba-lashon ha-ʻIvrit kolelet gam torat ha-niḳud deals with Hebrew phonology. He further developed the Hebrew number system and developed a new form of Hebrew shorthand .
