Israel Galván (2008)

Israel Galván de los Reyes (* 1973 in Seville ) is a Spanish flamenco dancer ( bailaor ) and choreographer . He learned to dance at a young age from his father, the dancer José Galván, and his mother Eugenia de los Reyes.

Today he is considered to be one of the most important contemporary flamenco dancers due to his daring choreographies and complicated and sometimes explosive foot movements that are broken up by moments of silence. One can also describe his dance art as avant-garde flamenco. She has received many awards.

Career

  • In 1994 he joined the Compañia Andaluza de Danza under the direction of Mario Maya . Over the course of a decade, it has won a number of important flamenco awards, including the Premio Nacional de Danza 2005 for the creative renewal of flamenco.
  • In 1998 he founded his own compañia and created his first work "Mira Los Zapatas Rojos". With each new work, his reputation as a risk-taking artist grew. For example, "Metamorphosis" is a flamenco version of Kafka 's novel of the same name (German title " The Metamorphosis ").
  • The choreography arena deals with bullfighting .
  • Other significant works are La Edad de Pro , Tabula Rasa , Solo , El Final , La Curva and Lo Real / Le Réel / The Real .
  • In all of his works, Israel Galván has collaborated with classical flamenco artists such as Fernando Terremoto , Inés Bacan , Bobote , El Electrico, as well as with contemporary innovators of flamenco such as Enrique Morente , Gerardo Núñez , Miguel Poveda , Diego Carrasco , Diego Amador , Alfredo Lagos and with contemporary ones Musicians.
  • For his younger sister Pastora , also a famous flamenco dancer, he wrote a number of innovative and multifaceted choreographies. Particularly noteworthy is '' La Francesa '', with which Pastora impressed audiences and critics at the 2006 Seville Biennale.
  • His work Lo Real / Le Réel / The Real 2013 was received controversially : Standing ovations in the Stasschouwburg in Amsterdam followed the very conservative reaction at the premiere in Madrid . On the one hand, this has to do with the topic: the Nazi Holocaust against the Roma. On the other hand with the way Israel Galván expresses himself physically up to the portrayed self-inflicted violence. In his play, Galván explicitly refers to Leni Riefenstahl's film Tiefland , which was shot between 1940 and 1944.
  • Premios Max is the most important Spanish theater award that is given every year. In 2014 Israel Galván won the prize in the three categories Coreografía , Interpretación and Espectáculo for Lo Real / Le Réel / The Real .
  • The world premiere of the genre- bound work Torobaka (a play on the Spanish words toro (bull) and vaca (cow, alluding to the sacred cow in Indian culture)) took place in Madrid on June 27, 2014 . Israel Galván performed there with Akram Khan , an English choreographer and dancer with Bengali roots. Both were accompanied by polyphonic music with elements of Gregorian chants, liturgical chants, songs in Hindu and the sounds of Anda Jaleo. The German premiere took place on July 11, 2014 in Dresden.
  • Also in 2014, Israel Galván published his work FLA.CO.MEN . His website says it is a concert. In this piece, Galván deconstructs flamenco and puts it back together in a humorous way. The music is partly free jazzy to experimental, but also traditional. The German premiere took place on February 9, 2015 in Bremen. In 2015 he won the prize in the Bailarín principal category for his performance FLA.CO.MEN .
  • As part of documenta 14 , Israel Galván presented the three-day performative intervention La farsa monea from April 19-21, 2017 in Athens together with the singer Niño de Elche and the artist Pedro G. Romero . It is a reflection on the social production of values within the art of the poor, the tradition of flamenco and the political subordinates - a collection of three different coins is related to the materialism of law, iconoclasm and prostitution. The play and dance of these coins transform the museum into a material and physical theater.
  • On May 6, 2017, Israel Galván gave the world premiere of La Fiesta in St. Pölten , Austria . “So in this new creation ... nine dancing voices and singing bodies meet and surrender in high notes to the immeasurable energies of their meeting. ... By surrounding himself with nine atypical dancers and musicians, Israel Galván takes a back seat to the movement, a movement that is the only and coded essence of ballet, ”says the website and program of the St. Pölten Festival Hall.
