He formed a dance couple with La Chunga . They made their debut at the Biombo Chino in Madrid and toured Venezuela, Cuba, Puerto Rico, the USA, Argentina and Colombia. In 1961 he appeared together with María Baena at the festival in Granada and on Madrid's Torres Bermejas flamenco stage and undertook another tour through America.
In 1965 he moved to New York, where he initiated dance evenings in the following years and was signed by Columbia Artist Management. His daughter Belén was born there in 1966 , who also developed into a famous dancer and choreographer.
After his return to Spain he created the Trío Madrid with Carmen Mora and El Güito , which performed with great success on flamenco stages and festivals. The Show Ceremonial was his first attempt to create a new way of flamenco performance. Others followed. In 1983 he founded the Mario Maya Flamenco , Ballet and Jazz Center in Seville .
