The Israeli Embassy in London is the headquarters of the diplomatic mission of Israel in the United Kingdom . It is located in the London borough of Kensington at Kensington Palace Gardens .

history

The red brick building in which the embassy is located is the house of the writer William Makepeace Thackeray , built in 1860–1862 . The house is on the Statutory List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest .

The main conference hall is named after Shlomo Argov , who was ambassador from 1979 to 1982 and was the victim of an attack. In the hall there is a flag of the Zionist pioneer Sir Moses Montefiore , which was handed over to the embassy by his family in 1980.

terrorist attacks

In 1972 the Israeli embassy in London was the first victim of a terrorist attack with consequences: eight letter bombs were sent to the embassy on September 19, probably by the terrorist organization Black September , which had carried out the Munich Olympic attack on Israeli athletes just a few days earlier would have. Seven of them were intercepted in time, but the remaining one killed the Israeli diplomat Ami Sachori.

Almost ten years later, on June 3, 1982, the acting ambassador Shlomo Argov was seriously injured by a shot in the head. The assassin - one of three - was Hussein Ghassan Said, a member of the Abu Nidal organization . Schlomo Argov survived the shot in the head, but was in need of care for 21 years and succumbed to the consequences of the wound in 2003.

On July 26, 1994 - one day after the peace agreement between Israel and Jordan - a car with 10 to 15 kg of explosives exploded in front of the embassy. The building suffered some damage and many windows in the neighborhood were broken, including Kensington Palace . The worst injury was just a broken arm. Iranian extremists close to Hezbollah are linked to the attack .
