Istor-o-Nal is the third highest mountain in the Hindu Kush . However, the name is used for a mountain with eleven individual peaks over 7000 meters. The Istor-o-Nal is located in Chitral , Pakistan near the Tirich Mir . Istoro Nal means "horseshoe" in the Khowar language. Istor means "horse". The origin of the name is unknown.

Ascent history

The Americans Joseph E. Murphy, Jr. and Thomas A. Mutch of the Princeton Mountaineering Club and their Pakistani liaison officer Ken Bankwala made a first attempt at ascent. On June 8, 1955, however, the two Americans only reached a secondary summit via the west ridge, which they believed to be the main summit because of the poor visibility. The first ascent of the main summit was made on August 12, 1969 by Josep Manuel Anglada, Jordi Pons, Joan Cerdá and Emili Civis as part of a Spanish expedition.
