Cardinal István Báncsa

István Báncsa (* in Hungary ; † July 9, 1270 in Rome ) was Archbishop of Esztergom and the first Hungarian cardinal of the Roman Church . He is also performed as Stefan Váncza and Stephanus de Vancsa ; his last name is also spelled Váncsa , Váncha , Vanca or Bánca .

Life

He was first provost in Vác and from 1238 to 1240 chancellor of the Hungarian king Béla IV. In 1241 he went to Rome and was elected Bishop of Vác in the same year . On July 7, 1243 he was appointed Archbishop of Esztergom. On July 19, 1251 he became a legate in Croatia and Dalmatia.

In the consistory of December 1251, Pope Innocent IV raised him to Cardinal Bishop of Palestrina . On May 5, 1253 he was appointed legate in Hungary and Slavonia. He took part in the papal election in 1254 , from which Alexander IV emerged as pope. He could not participate in the papal election in 1261 with the election of Urban IV , as he was in Hungary at that time. His name can be found among the papal voters from 1264-1265 , who elected Clement IV to the papacy; He was also involved in the election of the Pope from 1268 to 1271 , but died during the Sedis vacancy .

He was buried in the church of Santa Balbina in Rome.
