The Italian Line or Italia Line (official name Italia Società di Navigazione ) was an Italian shipping company based in Genoa , which existed from 1932 to 2002. The shipping company operated passenger and cruise ships until 1981, after which it switched to cargo ships.
history
The Italian Line was founded in 1932 after the Navigazione Generale Italiana and Lloyd Sabaudo merged to form a joint shipping company. Initially, the newly founded shipping company bought older Cosulich Line ships , but shortly afterwards, the shipping company's first newbuildings, the Rex and the Conte di Savoia, were put into service. The Rex won the Blue Ribbon in 1933 , which was good advertising for the still young shipping company. At the beginning of the war, the Italian Line's fleet consisted of thirteen ships, only four of which were spared from destruction. At the end of the 1940s, the shipping company therefore decided to build new passenger ships to compensate for this deficit. These ships, put into service from 1951 to 1954, were the Giulio Cesare , Augustus , Andrea Doria and the Cristoforo Colombo . in July 1956 the Andrea Doria sank off Nantucket Island, which caused a great loss of image for the shipping company. As a replacement for the sunken ship, the even larger Leonardo da Vinci was put into service in 1960 . It was followed in 1965 by the sister ships Raffaello and Michelangelo . In the 1970s, the shipping company shifted its focus to cruises and specifically founded a cruise offshoot called Italia Crociere in 1977, in which, in addition to the old units of the shipping company still in service, newly purchased ships from other shipping companies were used. However, this remained without great success, so that the shipping company decommissioned all passenger ships in 1980 and now only operated cargo ships. In 1998 the shipping company, which had belonged to the state for many years, was sold to the Italian d'Amico Società di Navigazione. In 2002 the Italian Line was finally dissolved after 70 years.
