The Italian Open 2000 was the 57th edition of the clay court tournament in Rome . The men's tournament, endowed with $ 2,950,000, took place as part of the ATP Masters Series , while the women's tournament was a Tier I tournament as part of the WTA Tour . The tournaments of both sexes took place in the Foro Italico . The men's tournament lasted from May 8th to 14th, the women's tournament was a week later from May 15th to 21st. The main field in the singles consisted of 64 participants, the doubles were each played by 32 pairings.

The defending champion in the men's singles was the Brazilian Gustavo Kuerten , who this time only had to admit defeat to the Swede Magnus Norman in the final . It was Norman's 2nd title in the 2000 season and his first success at the Masters tournament in Rome. In 1999 the American Venus Williams won the women's singles competition, in 2000 she was inherited by her compatriot Monica Seles , which marked her third title of the season and her first success at this tournament in her career.

The double tournament was won by Martin Damm and Dominik Hrbatý for the men and Lisa Raymond and Rennae Stubbs for the women. The previous year's winners were the pairings Ellis Ferreira / Rick Leach and Martina Hingis / Anna Kurnikowa in the women's category.
