Itamar Rabinovich ( Hebrew איתמר רבינוביץ, * 1942 in Jerusalem ) is professor emeritus for history of the Middle East at Tel Aviv University , former Israeli ambassador to the United States and chief negotiator for Israel in the peace negotiations with Syria in the 1990s.

Life

Rabinovich received his Bachelor of Arts from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem , his Master of Arts (MA) from Tel Aviv University and finally his Ph.D. at the University of California, Los Angeles .

From 1992 to 1995 he was Israel's chief negotiator in the peace negotiations with Syria , from 1993 to 1996 the Israeli ambassador to the United States . He then worked as a professor at Cornell University and was appointed President of Tel Aviv University. He heads the Dan David Foundation . He has been a visiting professor at several universities, including the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University .

Rabinovich is holder of the French Ordre des Palmes Académiques . In 2007 he was awarded the Great Golden Decoration for Services to the Republic of Austria . In 2009, together with Sari Nusseibeh, he received the Peace Prize from the Korn and Gerstenmann Foundation . In the same year he was appointed a member of the American Philosophical Society and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

Rabinovich is married and has two daughters.
