Itapoá is a port city in Brazil and is located in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina / SC. Itapoá was originally part of the municipality of Garuva, but has been independent since 1989. The main source of income is tourism, because the place is located directly on the South Atlantic and is surrounded by beaches. The nature reserve of "Volta Velha", which belongs to Itapoá, is overgrown by the typical coastal vegetation of this area, which is called Restinga.

Economy and port

The port and container terminal of Itapoá is majority owned by the German shipping company Hamburg Süd , which operates one of the most important shipping routes to and from South America from Europe and North America . But the major shipping companies MSC , CSAV and Maersk are also among the customers of this new terminal. The container terminal was opened in May 2012 and had a capacity of 435,000 TEUs in 2014 (41% growth within one year). The main goods for export are frozen chicken, car parts for BMW and textiles from the state of Santa Catarina . The state's share of cargo is currently 25.4%. The main competitors in the port business are the neighboring ports of Imbituba , Itajaí , Navegantes / Portonave, and São Francisco do Sul .
