Itzelberg is a district of the municipality of Königsbronn in the Heidenheim district at the eastern end of the Swabian Alb in eastern Baden-Württemberg .

Location and transport links

Itzelberg is located in the upper Brenz Valley on Lake Itzelberg . This is a reservoir that is fed by the Brenz , which rises in a spring pot one kilometer above in Königsbronn.

The traffic connection takes place directly over the federal highway 19 (B 19). There is also a Brenzbahn station in the center of the village , which is served every two hours.

history

The place name comes from the high and late Middle Ages. The hamlet of Utzelenberg is known around 1300 . In 1302 the spelling Vitzelenberg appears in a document .

The resistance fighter Georg Elser worked in the quarry in the east of Itzelberg in April 1939, where he stole the explosives for his failed assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler on November 8, 1939. On the occasion of his 100th year of birth, a record was made on the Königsbronn cemetery in Itzelberg near the Blasius chapel a symbolic grave erected for Georg Elser next to those who died in World War II; in fact, the ashes of Elser's body were buried somewhere near the crematorium of the Dachau concentration camp in April 1945 .

On January 1, 1971, Itzelberg was incorporated into Königsbronn.

Others

The oldest building is the medieval Blasius Chapel, which was the pilgrimage destination of pilgrims who hoped that St. Blaise would alleviate their neck problems. In 1835 the Blasius Chapel was converted into a school for the Itzelberg children, including a teacher's apartment. In 1856 the building became a cemetery chapel. Since a new funeral hall was built in 1972, it has been used by the cemetery gardener as a tool shed.

The forest education center on the outskirts, also known as the “forest work school”, is known throughout the country. Among other things, courses for master forestry are held there. The course participants are accommodated in an affiliated boarding school.
