Ivan William Armes (born April 6, 1924 in Lowestoft , † November 11, 2015 in Norfolk ) was an English football player .

Career

Armes played in his hometown of Lowestoft for the factory team of the shipbuilding company Brooke Marine before joining Norwich City as an amateur in June 1945 . In the season 1945/46, in the war-related substitute competitions, he played five games.

In November 1946 Armes, who stood out particularly with his tackles and his ability to catch up with opponents, rose to a professional at Norwich and came mostly on the left runner position in the Football League Third Division South over the next few years to 61 league appearances for the first team, next to it he also played over 100 games for Norwich's reserve eleven. After he was in competition with Grenville Williams , Len Dutton and Maurice Tobin until February 1950 , the establishment of Ron Ashman in March 1950 ensured that he was no longer used in the first team until his departure in December 1951. After being put on the transfer list at his own request, he moved to league rivals Exeter City on December 22, 1951 for a transfer fee of £ 1000 and scored a goal on his debut three days later in a 4-0 win against Torquay United . On December 29, he put another goal against Leyton Orient , but was subsequently unable to establish himself in either of the two outside runner positions and only made two further competitive appearances from April 1952 until his departure in the summer of 1953.

As a result, he went back to his hometown and played for Lowestoft Town and also took a role on the coaching team. After he had ended his career in 1955, he returned briefly from his sporting retirement in 1958. After his professional career, he ran a newsagent in Lowestoft. Armes died in November 2015, his home club observed a minute's silence in his honor before a game for the FA Trophy at the end of November .
