Mitchell played from 1912 - with the exception of the 1914/15 season when he went on the ice for the Portland Rosebuds in the Pacific Coast Hockey Association - in lower class leagues. In December 1919, the Toronto St. Patricks signed the goalkeeper from the National Hockey League . Mitchell stayed with the team for two years before joining league rivals Hamilton Tigers in early December 1921 . Due to the injury of Toronto goalkeeper John Ross Roach , the St. Patricks brought their former team member back to Toronto on loan in mid-December to replace Roach. But he only ran twice for the team, as he had to have a career-ending illness treated at the Mayo Clinic in Baltimore , Maryland, USA . Still, at the end of the season, the goalkeeper was part of the team that won the Stanley Cup .
