Ivica Šurjak (born March 23, 1953 in Split , Yugoslavia , today Croatia ), real first name Ivo , nickname Šuro , is a former Yugoslav football player .

The 1.90 m tall winger and midfielder belonged to the so-called "golden generation" of the 1970s of the Hajduk Split club . He was characterized by his speed, his outstanding dribbling , his hard shot as well as his great running and fighting strength.

Career

Šurjak made his debut for Hajduk Split in the first division of Yugoslavia on October 3, 1971 in the game against Partizan Belgrade and scored the 2-1 winner. In the following years he won the Yugoslav Championship three times and the Yugoslav Cup five times with Hajduk.

In 1981 the Croat moved to the French first division at Paris Saint-Germain and won the French Cup there. In 1982 he was hired by the Italian club Udinese Calcio before moving to Real Saragossa in Spain two years later , where he ended his career a year later.

National team

For the Yugoslav national football team Šurjak played for the first time on June 6, 1973 in a 0-0 draw against Spain in Zagreb . At the 1974 World Cup in Germany , he played five times and scored two goals. At the European Football Championship in 1976 and the Football World Cup in 1982 , he was used four and three times and remained in each case without a goal.

He played a total of 54 games for Yugoslavia and scored 10 goals.

After the playing career

Between 1999 and 2003, Šurjak held the post of sports director at his hometown club Hajduk. From April 2007 to summer 2008 he was employed there again, although there was disagreement about the exact name of the activity. He is currently part of the Hajduk management.
