Ivo Schaible

Father Ivo Schaible SDS , born as Josef Schaible (* July 8, 1912 in Baustetten ; † September 13, 1990 in Munich ) was a German Roman Catholic clergyman and artist .

Life

Josef Schaible was born in Baustetten in Upper Swabia , which is now part of Laupheim. At the age of eleven he came to the boarding school of the Society of the Divine Savior , also called Salvatorians , in Lochau near Bregenz on Lake Constance . After his ordination in 1939, he was involuntarily conscripted as a clergyman in the German Wehrmacht . After the Second World War he studied from 1946 to 1951 at the Munich Art Academy with Franz Nagel . He then worked as a sacred artist and missionary in Colombia from 1951 to 1964 . He was best known as an artist for his glass windows in churches. He was not only a glass artist , but also a landscape and portrait painter , photographer and insect collector. All his life he worked with the means of art for the glory of God and for the proclamation of the Christian faith.

He died on September 13, 1990 in Munich. The Requiem took place on September 19th and was celebrated by the Bishop of Santo Domingo de los Colorados Emil Stehle in the Church of St. Willibald in Munich.

In the museum on the history of Christians and Jews in Laupheim one room is dedicated to him.
