Vita

According to legendary tradition, Ivan was the son of a Dalmatian prince (or the son of the Abodritic king Gestimulus / Gostimysl) who is said to have lived in the 9th century. He lived by the Loděnice brook in the later Svatý Jan pod Skalou not far from the Tetín Castle near Beroun , between Prague and the Karlštejn Castle , for 14 years (42 years according to other sources) hidden in a cave. He spent his time in prayer and meditation, and lived on plants and the milk of a doe. This, pursued and injured by the hunters of Prince Bořivoj I , is said to have led to his discovery. The prince and his wife Ludmilla of Bohemia tried in vain to persuade him to move to the castle. Ivan only stipulated that he could distribute the deer's meat among the poor. He is said to have died three days later. A Benedictine monastery founded there in 1033 was later named after him, today known as "Monastery of St. John under the Rock" (sv. Jan pod Skalou ).
