Ivan Ilyich Sakharov ( Russian Иван Ильич Захаров , scientific transliteration Ivan Il'ič Zacharov , also: Ivan Ilyich Zakharov ; born 1816 ; died 1885 ) was a Russian diplomat and philologist.

Life

He worked in the Russian Spiritual Mission in Beijing between 1839 and 1850. He was the first Russian consul in China to prepare the Gulja Treaty in 1851 and helped demarcate the Russian-Chinese border in 1864.

Sakharov ended his career as a professor of Manchurian at the St. Petersburg Imperial University . Many of his works remained in manuscript. His Complete Manchurian-Russian Dictionary of 1875 became one of the first Manchurian dictionaries available in Europe at the time of its publication. In 1879 Sakharov's draft of a grammar for the Manchu language appeared , part two was not published.

As a member of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society , Sakharov published several notes and reviews in the Society's editions.

Sakharov was known not only as a man of the Manchu and Chinese languages , but also as a connoisseur of China.
