Ivan Vasilyevich Novopokrowski

Ivan Vasilyevich Nowopokrowski ( Russian Иван Васильевич Новопокровский * 7. December 1880 in Mikhailov , Russian Empire ; † the thirtieth May 1951 in Rostov-on-Don , USSR ) was a Russian -sowjetischer botanist and a specialist in the field of vegetation geography and systematics of higher plants . Its botanical author abbreviation is “ Novopokr. ".

biography

Ivan Vasilyevich Novopokrowski was born on December 7, 1880 in Mikhailov in what is now Ryazan Oblast . In 1904 he graduated from the Faculty of Natural Sciences at Moscow University . 1920–1931 he was professor at the Novocherkassker Institute for Agriculture and Melioration. Until 1934 he was a professor at the Krasnodar Agricultural Institute.

From 1934 to 1944 he worked at the Rostov State University , where he was head of the Department of Botany and Dean of the Faculty of Biology. In 1936 he founded (with the participation of Professors A. Flerov and VN Vershkovsky) Herbarium from Rostov University.

He also worked at the Don Polytechnic Institute and in the North Caucasus Department of the State Institute for the Study of Arid Lands. From 1945 he worked at the Botanical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR ( Leningrad ), where he headed the Central Asian Herbarium.

In the years 1935–1942 Nowopokrowski was persecuted by the Stalin regime.

He spoke several foreign languages.

In 1985, in connection with the 70th anniversary of the Rostov State University and in recognition of the services of Ivan Novopokrovski for the organization of the university herbarium, the Rostov University herbarium was revived after him. This is one of the largest herbaria in all of Russia.

Scientific work

Nowopokrowski studied flora and vegetation of the south-eastern European part of the USSR . Today he is known for his work on the systematics of some plant genera from the sunflower family (Compositae) and the blackberry family , among which he described many new species. He was the author of more than 120 scientific papers, including " Zone types of the steppes of the European part of the USSR ", " Vegetation of the Rostov region ", " Quarantine weeds of the Rostov region ".
