history
Emergence
IZ * ONE was created in the casting show "Produce 48". Produce 48 was the third season of the Mnet TV show "Produce 101". Seasons 1 and 2 of Produce 101 aired in 2016 and 2017 and spawned the groups IOI and Wanna One . What was new about this season was not only the name, but also that the 96 participants consisted of South Korean trainees and members of the Japanese girl group AKB48 and its sister groups. Well-known South Korean participants were, among others, Lee Chae-yeon (known for her participation in " K-Pop Star 3 " and "Sixteen"), Jang Gyuri (member of the girl group Fromis 9 ), Kim Min-ju (known as an actress) , Park Min-ji and Kim Si-hyeon (both participants in the first season of "Produce 101"). Produce 48 aired from June 15 to August 31, 2018. In the final on August 31, Jang Won-young, Miyawaki Sakura, Jo Yu-ri, Choi Ye-na, Ahn Yu-jin, Yabuki Nako, Kwon Eun-bi, Kang Hye-won, Honda Hitomi, Kim Chae-won , Kim Min-ju and Lee Chae-yeon took the first twelve places and became members of IZ * ONE.
On September 21, it was announced that the newly founded agency Off the Record Entertainment would take over the management of IZ * ONE. The group was originally under contract with Pledis Entertainment and Stone Music Entertainment.
Off the Record Entertainment announced on September 24th that the three Japanese members Miyawaki Sakura, Yabuki Nako and Honda Hitomi would suspend all activities for their groups AKB48 and HKT48 until the dissolution of IZ * ONE in April 2021. Before that, the three girls will record one last single with AKB48, which will be released on November 28th.
The reality show "IZ * ONE CHU" started on October 15th on Mnet, showing the group preparing for their debut. The series is scheduled to air weekly until November 15th.
2018 – present: Debut in South Korea and Japan
IZ * ONE officially debuted on October 29, 2018 with the EP Color * Iz and the single La Vie en Rose . During the debut event at the Olympic Hall in Seoul, the group also announced the name of their official fan club: "WIZ * ONE". Color * Iz sold more than 34,000 copies in the first 24 hours, setting a new record for the most sales of a debut album on the first day. Color * Iz made it to number 2 on the Gaon Charts and even reached number 1 on the Oricon Album Charts in Japan. On November 8th, just ten days after their debut, the group scored their first win at a music show. On December 6th, Off the Record Entertainment announced that IZ * ONE was preparing to make its debut in Japan on February 6th, 2019. To this end, the group signed a contract with EMI Records in Japan.
On February 6, 2019, IZ * ONE officially debuted in Japan with the single Suki to Iwasetai ( 好 き と 言 わ せ た い ) and also set a new record there with 193,469 units for the most sales of a K-Pop girl group on the first day. Suki to Iwasetai was awarded platinum by the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ) a month later .
On April 1st, the group released their second EP Heart * Iz together with the single Violeta ( 비올레타 ) in South Korea. Off the Records Entertainment announced on March 29th that by March 28th, more than 200,000 pre-orders for Heart * Iz had been registered.
