IOI ( Ideal of Idol , Korean 아이오 아이 ) is a South Korean girl group founded in 2016 by YMC Entertainment . The group was put together in the Mnet TV show Produce 101 and was planned as a temporary group from the start. IOI officially debuted on May 4, 2016 with the mini album Chrysalis . The group was disbanded on January 29, 2017. On June 30, 2019, Studio Blu announced that IOI would return in October 2019 with nine members excluding Yeonjung and Somi.

history

Prehistory: Produce 101

In November 2015, Mnet announced the start of a new survival show called "Produce 101". In the TV show, 101 trainees from different agencies were supposed to fight to become members of an eleven-member girl group. In addition to many unknown people, there were also some familiar faces among the participants. For example Jeon So-mi, who was previously seen in the TV show "Sixteen", from which the girl group Twice emerged , or Heo Chan-mi, who was already a member of the group Coed School .

"Produce 101" started on January 21, 2016 and ended on April 1 after 11 episodes broadcast. Lim Na-young, Kim Chung-ha, Kim Se-jeong, Jung Chae-yeon , Zhou Jieqiong, Kim So-hye, Yu Yeon-jung, Choi Yoo-jung, Kang Mi-na, Kim Do-yeon and Jeon So -mi took the first eleven places in the final and became members of IOI

On April 5th, the pre-release single Crush was released . The single was only available as a download and was originally intended to be IOI's debut single. YMC Entertainment and Mnet decided to postpone the debut to May to give the new group more time to prepare. Crush reached number 12 on the Gaon Charts.

Debut with Chrysalis

On April 11th, May 4th was announced as the official debut date. IOI released the mini-album Chrysalis and the single Dream Girls that day . One day later, the group officially appeared for the first time on the music show “M! Countdown ”.

Since it was contractually agreed that the members were allowed to pursue other activities as long as there were no appointments or other obligations with IOI, Chaeyeon went back to her actual group DIA in May to prepare for their comeback in June. Other members also took advantage of this opportunity: Sejeong and Mina went back to their agency in early June to prepare for the debut of their group Gugudan ; Yeonjung joined her agency in July and became a member of the girl group Cosmic Girls and took part in their comeback in August.

On May 27, it was announced that IOI would continue in subgroups. In addition, the liquidation of the group was set for the end of January 2017.

Further activities in 2016

On June 10, it was announced that Nayoung, Chungha, Zhou, Sohye, Yoojung, Doyeon and Somi would form a subgroup. On August 9th, Whatta Man (Good Man) was the first single of this subgroup. In addition, the single Hand in Hand ( 손 에 손 잡고 ) was released on August 15 , a cover of the official song of the Summer Olympics , which took place in Seoul in 1988.

At the end of August, YMC Entertainment announced that IOI was preparing for a comeback with all eleven members.

In September work began on a new mini-album that was released on October 17th under the name Miss Me? was released together with the single Very Very Very ( 너무 너무 너무 ) . Very Very Very , written by Park Jin-young , founder of JYP Entertainment , became the group's only number one hit. Miss Me? made it to number 2 on the album charts.

In early November, YMC Entertainment announced that IOI would be officially dissolved on January 31, 2017. In the following years, the group was seen in various TV shows. However, new music was not released.

Dissolution of the group

On January 18, 2017, Downpour ( 소나기 ), the group's last single, was released. All 11 members were involved in the recording.

On January 29th, IOI appeared for the last time on the MBC television show "Section TV". After this performance, the group officially broke up.

Activities after the dissolution

  • Sejeong and Mina went back to their group Gugudan
  • Chaeyeon went back to her group DIA
  • Yeonjung went back to her group Cosmic Girls
  • Sohye founded her own agency (S&P Entertainment) in 2016 and opened a fan café in Seoul. After the dissolution of IOI, she made her debut as an actress in several web series and was active again as a presenter in various TV and radio shows.
  • Somi went back to JYP Entertainment. In February she was already on the TV show "Sister's Slam Dunk" and became a member of the also temporary group Unnies . She has also been the presenter of the music show "The Show" since 2016, which she continued in 2017. In 2018 she left JYP Entertainment and shortly afterwards signed a contract with The Black Label . On June 13, 2019, she made her debut as a solo artist with the single Birthday .
  • Yoojung and Doyeon went back to their agency and debuted with the Weki Meki group in August 2017 .
  • Chungha went back to MNH Entertainment to plan her solo debut. She released Pre-Single Week on April 21, 2017 and officially debuted on June 7 with the mini-album Hands on Me and the single Why Don't You Know .
  • Nayoung and Zhou returned to Pledis Entertainment and became members of the girl group Pristin , which released the mini-album Hi! On March 21, 2017 . Pristin made her debut. Zhou has called himself Kyulkyung ever since. Pristin broke up in May 2019. Kyulkyung stayed with Pledis Entertainment. Nayoung's contract with the agency was terminated.

On November 29, 2017, Yoojung, Doyeon, Chungha, Nayoung and Kyulkyung appeared under the name IOI as presenters at the Mnet Asian Music Awards . During the course of the event, all five of them were back on stage together when Weki Meki, Pristin and Chungha sang Pick Me and songs by AKB48 together with Idol School Class 1, Fromis 9 and AKB48 .

2019: reunification

On June 30, 2019, Studio Blu announced that IOI would return with nine members in October 2019. Yeonjung and Somi cannot make this comeback due to their own dates.
