Gugudan ( Korean 구구단 , stylized spelling : gu9udan or gx9 ) is a South Korean girl group that was founded by Jellyfish Entertainment in 2016 . The group debuted on June 28, 2016 with the single Wonderland and the mini-album Act.1 The Little Mermaid . It consists of the members Hana, Mimi, Haebin, Nayoung, Sejeong, Sally, Soyee and Mina. The official fan club name is "Dan-jjak ( 단짝 )" or "Dear Friend".

history

Emergence

Before founding the group, Sejeong, Mina and Nayoung took part in the survival show "Produce 101" as trainees from Jellyfish Entertainment. The broadcast was about 101 female trainees from different agencies competing against each other to ultimately become part of an 11-person girl group. All three girls made it to the final, but Nayoung did not make it to one of the first 11 places. Sejeong and Mina became part of the girl group IOI .

On June 7th, 2016, three days after the last official appearance of the group IOI, Jellyfish Entertainment announced the establishment of its first own girl group. In the notice, Sejeong and Mina were confirmed as the first two members of the group. In the days that followed, further details about the group became known. On June 16, the size of the group and all members were revealed. A day later, Jellyfish announced that the name of the group would be "Gugudan".

2016: Debut with Wonderland

Before the debut, several videos entitled Welcome to gugudan theater were published on the official Youtube channel , in which all nine members and the concept of the group were presented. There were also two teaser videos for the single Wonderland and a video with the title gugdan Act.1 The Little Mermaid Highlight Medley , on which snippets of all titles of the EP can be heard.

On June 28, 2016 Gugudan debuted with her single Wonderland and the EP Act.1 The Little Mermaid . Wonderland made it to number 35 on the Gaon Digital Charts and the EP was number 2.

2017: Act.2 Narcissus, Gugudan 5959 and other activities

In early February, Gugudan's first comeback from Jellyfish Entertainment was scheduled for February 28th. This date was later brought forward by one day. On February 27, Gugudan released the single A Girl Like Me ( 나 같은 애 ) and the EP Act.2 Narcissus . The single was at number 38 in the charts and the EP at number 3.

In July, Jellyfish Entertainment announced that a subgroup called Gugudan 5959 ( 구구단 오구 오구 ) consisting of Mina and Hyeyeon would make their debut in August. Her single is called Ice Chu and was released on August 10th.

Sejeong and Mina also worked as actresses. Sejeong played a leading role in the TV drama School 2017, for which she received the Popularity Award at The Soul Awards and Best New Actress at the KBS Drama Awards. Mina made her acting debut in the TV series "20th Century Boys and Girls".

On October 8th, Jellyfish Entertainment announced that Gugudan were preparing for their new comeback in November. On October 19, it was announced that Soyee had interrupted preparations for the comeback in November due to a shoulder injury and that the group is also not available for the promotion. Gugudan will continue with the remaining eight members until Soyee is fully recovered.

Further details about the comeback were announced on October 25th and the following days. On November 8th, Gugudan released their first single album Act.3 Chococo Factory and the single Chococo.

2018: Gugudan SEMINA and Hyeyeon's exit

On January 9, 2018, Jellyfish Entertainment announced that Gugudan were preparing for their January 31 comeback. It was also reported that Soyee had fully recovered from her shoulder injury and had returned to the group. The appointment was later postponed by a day. On February 1, Gugudan's second single album Act.4 Cait Sith was released along with the single The Boots .

On May 17th, Jellyfish Entertainment announced that Hyeyeon had suspended all group and solo activities until further notice for health reasons.

On June 29, a teaser video was released that announced a new subgroup of Gugudan. A little later, Jellyfish Entertainment officially confirmed the creation of the subgroup. It consists of the members Sejeong, Mina and Nayoung and is called Gugudan SEMINA. On July 10th, Gugudan SEMINA released the single album Semina ( 샘 이나 ) together with the single of the same name.

In a release on October 25th, Jellyfish Entertainment announced Hyeyeon's exit from the group. The announcement said that Hyeyeon was working on her recovery and that she was still under contract with Jellyfish Entertainment. Gugudan will continue as a group of eight from now on and prepare for the planned comeback on November 6th.
