Jeon So-mi ( Korean 전 소미 ; * March 9, 2001 as Ennik Somi Douma in Ontario , Canada ), also known by her stage name Somi , is a South Korean pop singer. She was known for her participation in the talent shows Sixteen and Produce 101 as well as a member of girl group I.OI . She is currently under contract with The Black Label .

life and career

Jeon Somi was born Ennik Somi Douma on March 9, 2001 in Ontario, Canada. Her mother is Korean and her father is the Dutch-Canadian photojournalist and actor Matthew Douma. She has a younger sister. Because of her ancestry, Somi has Korean, Canadian and Dutch citizenship. Just like her father, Somi has been practicing the martial arts Taekwondo since childhood . She currently holds the 3rd Dan.

In 2014, she appeared briefly with her father and sister at the end of the film Ode to My Father .

Somi visits the Hanlim Multi Art School in Seoul .

In 2015 Somi took part as a trainee at JYP Entertainment on the television show Sixteen , in which the girl group Twice was founded. She made it to the finals but didn't join the group. From January to April 2016, she took part in the television show Produce 101 . In this program, 101 trainees from various agencies competed for a place in a temporarily planned girl group. Somi was voted number 1 in the final and debuted with IOI in May 2016 .

In January 2017, shortly before the dissolution of IOI, Somi got an artist contract from JYP Entertainment. From February to May 2017, she took part in the 2nd season of the TV show Sisters' Slam Dunk , where she and the other participants formed the girl group Unnies and the singles Right? and Lalala Song released. Right? made it to number 2 on the Gaon Digital Charts. From May to June 2017 she was seen in the show Idol Drama Operation Team , in which she and D.ana (from Sonamoo ), Moonbyul ( Mamamoo ), Seulgi ( Red Velvet ), Kim So-hee (IBI), YooA ( Oh My Girl ) and Sujeong ( Lovelyz ) wrote scripts for a web series and all together released the single Deep Blue Eyes under the name Girls Next Door . From October 2016 to April 2017 she hosted the music program The Show together with Woo-shin from UP10TION .

On August 20, 2018, JYP Entertainment announced the termination of the contract with Somi. A month later she signed a deal with The Black Label, a sub-label of YG Entertainment . On June 13, 2019 Somi made her debut as a solo artist with the single Birthday .
