The Jägerbataillon 511 was until 1997 an active association of the hunter troop in Flensburg-Weiche. The battalion was under as nördlichster Infantry Association of Armed Forces of the Territorial Brigade 51 and the Territorial Association of the 6th Panzer Grenadier Division . Due to the proximity to the border, also due to the adjacent Jägerslust military training area , the association maintained good contacts with the neighboring NATO armed forces in Denmark . The garrison was the Briesen barracks .

history

The association was set up on July 1, 1956 from members of the 1st Abbot of Border Guard Group 7 ( BGS ) in Hamburg . In July 1957 he was stationed as GrenBtl 61 in Buxtehude under Lieutenant Colonel Gadow as the first commander. From there the association was relocated a year later to the barely completed Heereskaserne-West (from 1964 Briesen-Kaserne ) in Flensburg-Weiche and renamed GrenBtl 16 . However, it had to make room for a new unit as early as 1959 and moved to the Flensburg border barracks , where the unit was renamed PzGrenBtl 161 (mot). Like many others, the association was used to help with the flood disaster in February 1962 .

In 1969, the “Silver Viking Ship” of the NECIC international infantry competition won a team from the battalion. A year later, the association was renamed Jägerbataillon 381 and placed under Homeland Security Command 13 .

On January 5, 1971, the soldiers of the battalion received the green beret from the commander of the Homeland Security Command. The troop flag was handed over in 1976. During the snow disaster in 1978/79, the battalion survived its toughest deployment. In the summer of 1979, Prime Minister Gerhard Stoltenberg awarded the unit the banner of the State of Schleswig-Holstein.

The 10-year anniversary of the renaming was celebrated with a solemn pledge on the Flensburg Südermarkt . A year later, the battalion was subordinated to the Jägerbataillon 511 and HSchBrig 51 as part of Army Structure IV . On May 23, 1987 the 30th anniversary was celebrated in the Briesen barracks. The battalion took over the sponsorship of the association "Comradeship of Former Hunters and Shooters" in 1989.

Shortly after reunification , support teams of the battalion began their service in the new federal states. In 1992 the 3rd Company took part in an exercise with the 1st Royal Anglians in Salisbury Plains . After the HSchKdo 51 was dissolved, the battalion was subordinated to the Defense District Command 11 in Schleswig . The battalion was disbanded in 1996.

In 1993 the association took over the sponsorship of the art project "Healthy District Weiche". Defense Minister Volker Rühe announced the dissolution of the battalion in early 1997 in March 1995. This fact and the dissolution of the barracks was celebrated again with an open house on September 6, 1996. This is also where the roll call took place. The last soldiers left the barracks on March 31, 1997. The area was then transformed into the Gartenstadt residential area .
