in detail

The Jägerkaserne was a barracks in Dresden , Saxony . It was built from 1880 and was named “Jägerkaserne” after the inauguration. The barracks were located outside of Albertstadt at the Albertbrücke in Johannstadt on Johannstädter Ufer , today's Käthe-Kollwitz-Ufer .

history

The planning for the barracks was carried out by the Royal Military Building Commission under the direction of Lieutenant Colonel August Protius. The designs for the castle-like building complex were made by Oswald Haenel and Bruno Adam .

"In the architecture of the building, the main emphasis was placed on giving the barracks a light and dignified appearance, structuring the significant building mass with strong templates and, in particular, giving the silhouette a very lively shape."

The more than 4000 square meter courtyard was reached via two granite stairs . The facades of the ground floor, the corner buildings and the central building were clad with large areas of sandstone , while the wall surfaces of the upper floors were only plastered. The roofs were covered with English slate . The dining room of the Oberjäger Casino was designed in the style of a hunting lodge.

On October 12, 1913, the first German colonial war memorial was erected in front of the barracks in the presence of King Friedrich August III. revealed. The memorial was attached to the memorial: “In memory of the comrades of the Royal Saxon Army who remained in the overseas battles ”.

During an air raid on February 13 and 14, 1945 , the barracks complex was largely destroyed and later demolished. The undamaged colonial war memorial was demolished on January 20, 1947.

use

On September 30, 1882, the 2nd Royal Saxon Jäger Battalion No. 13 from Meissen moved into the barracks. In August 1914, the Reserve Jäger Battalion No. 13 and the Reserve Jäger Battalion No. 25 were also formed there.

In January 1943 the II. Sturmbann moved the SA standard "Feldherrenhalle" from Munich to the Jägerkaserne in Dresden and later it served as a police barracks.

In 2006 a nursing home was built on the former barracks site .
