Scientific activity

Józef Bogusz belonged to the Kraków School of Thyroid Surgery. He also dealt with surgery of the stomach, intestines and biliary tract, as well as problems that arise during operations on older patients. Thanks to his impetus for technical improvements in thyroid surgical techniques, mortality from surgical treatment of hyperthyroidism has decreased from 5.3% in the 1950s to 0.8% in the 1960s. Bogusz was one of the pioneers in Poland in the surgical treatment of cancers of the esophagus and stomach entrance. He introduced techniques for creating artificial intestinal openings ( anus praeter ) and dealt with psychological problems of operated patients.

In addition, one of his passions was the history of surgery.

Publications

Józef Bogusz is the author of several medical textbooks and more than 200 scientific dissertations published in Poland and abroad. Part of this research concerns the history of Polish surgery and ethical issues, including:

  • “The doctor and his patients” - “Lekarz i jego chorzy”, Józef Bogusz PZWL, ISBN 83-200-0853-0
  • "In the service of human life and health" - "W służbie zdrowia i życia ludzkiego"

The Historical Commission of Polish Surgeons ("Komisja Historyczna Towarzystwa Chirurgów Polskich") was the initiator of the book "Outline of the History of Polish Surgery". The introduction says that the book is

“… Dedicated not only to the memory of the great, whose names are generally known and valued, but also to the nameless multitude of surgeons whose work and actions are not mentioned in our memories. The book was written in memory of younger colleagues who should get to know their own origins, but also for those who are enthusiastic about modern technology, who tend to claim that there was nothing before them. They should know that history will only respect them if they will also respect history. "

Józef Bogusz has worked as a senior editor in the publication of textbooks for nursing, for example:

  • "Surgery for Nurses" - "Chirurgia dla pielęgniarek", PZWL Warszawa 1962
  • "Encyclopedia for Nurses" - "Encyklopedia dla pielęgniarek"

His services as co-founder and editor-in-chief of the Auschwitz booklets of the “Ärztliche Rundschau”, which were dedicated to the detailed documentation of the events of the Second World War and at the same time were looking for possibilities for a German-Polish rapprochement, are highlighted.

In 1987 a German anthology was published:

  • "Die Auschwitz-Hefte" Texts from the Polish magazine "Przegląd Lekarski" on historical, psychological and medical aspects of life and death in Auschwitz. Published by the Hamburg Institute for Social Research. Beltz Verlag ISBN 3 407 85501 X ,
  • New edition 1994 by Rogner & Bernhard GmbH & Co. Verlag KG, Hamburg ISBN 3-8077-0282-2 .
