Józef Bujak (born October 31, 1898 in Zakopane , † April 22, 1949 there ) was a Polish skier. He was three times Polish champion in cross-country skiing and once in slalom . Over time, however, he specialized exclusively in cross-country skiing.

Career

Bujak began his skiing career in 1913, which was initially in the background of his military career. During the First World War , Bujak fought on the Russian and Italian fronts , where he was badly wounded. After the establishment of an independent Polish state , Bujak joined the Polish army and served as a non-commissioned officer . During the Polish-Soviet war he was injured again.

In 1920 Bujak became the first Polish slalom champion. At the ski championships in Zakopane , he was also fourth in both 18 km cross-country skiing and ski jumping. Even though he won the bronze medal at the championships in special jumping behind Andrzej Krzeptowski and Henryk Mückenbrunn in 1926 , he concentrated on cross-country skiing. In 1925 Bujak first took part in the Nordic World Ski Championships in Janské Lázně , where he reached 24th place in the 50 km endurance run. At the Olympic Winter Games in 1928 , he finished 19th in the 50 km ski marathon and 18th in the 18 km cross-country skiing with a time of 5:44:19 hours. Although he was nominated for the 1929 World Ski Championships in Zakopane, he was not allowed to compete on suspicion of jaundice .

Bujak was awarded the Przegląd Sportowy award for best skier in 1925 and 1926 .
