József Bíró

József Bíró (born February 13, 1921 in Budapest ; † May 18, 2001 ibid) was a Hungarian politician of the Party of the Hungarian Working People MDP (Magyar Dolgozók Pártja) and finally the Hungarian Socialist Workers Party MSZMP (Magyar Szocialista Munkáspárt) , who among others between 1963 and 1979 was Minister of Foreign Trade.

Life

Bíró, the son of a mechanic , also completed vocational training as a mechanic between 1934 and 1936 after attending school and was employed in this profession at the Magyar Posztógyár cloth factory until 1940 , before he was employed as a welder at the Budapest public transport company BKV Zrt in 1940 . After completing a technical school between 1946 and 1948, he became a foreman at BKV Zrt at the end of 1948.

After further training at the State Technical College for Technology (Állami Műszaki Főiskola) in Budapest, he became an employee of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1949, where he was initially employed in payroll accounting before becoming head of the technical department. After Bíró had completed his studies in foreign trade at the Academy of Economics and Technology (Gazdasági és Műszaki Akadémia) in 1953 , he became deputy head of the import department of the Ministry of Foreign Trade.

He then took over the position of General Director of the state heavy industry trading company NIKEX in February 1955, before becoming head of the commercial agency in London in 1957 . After his return he acted between 1960 and February 1962, first as party secretary of the MSZMP in the Ministry of Foreign Trade and was then from February 10, 1962 to December 7, 1963 Vice Minister for Foreign Trade.

On December 7, 1963, Bíró was appointed Foreign Trade Minister (Külkereskedelmi Miniszter) in the government of Prime Minister János Kádár and also exercised this function in the subsequent governments of Prime Ministers Gyula Kállai , Jenő Fock and György Lázár . On March 30, 1979, Péter Veress took over the post of Foreign Trade Minister in the Lázár cabinet as his successor .

On December 3, 1966 Bíró was in 1966 and his doctorate of Doctor of Laws at the University of Pécs graduated at the IX. Party Congress elected as a member of the Central Committee (ZK) of the MSZMP and belonged to this until the XII. Party Congress on March 27, 1980. After leaving the government and the Central Committee, he was elected as a candidate of the MSZMP for the first time as a member of the parliament (Országgyűlés) on June 8, 1980 and represented the sixth constituency of Győr-Moson-Sopron County until March 16, 1990 .
