from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jörg Riechers (born September 16, 1968 in Hamburg ) is a German professional sailor who has specialized in offshore regattas (transatlantic / round the world). He has been a professional since 2008 and so far was the only German who could win one-hand regattas . In 2012 he was also the first German to win a transatlantic regatta. In 2017 he finished second in the Mini Transat

Career

Riechers began his one-handed career in the Mini 6.50 class (a 6.5 m keelboat.) He built his first Mini in 2008 together with the French designer Etienne Bertrand in his garage near Paris. With this boat Jörg Riechers won almost all important one-hand regattas except for the Mini Transat 2011, which he finished in 5th place despite a broken keel and thus achieved the best result of a German skipper of all time in this race. In 2010, Riechers started sailing Class 40 in addition to the Mini 6.50. In 2010 he took 6th place in the field of 44 Class 40's on the famous Route du Rhum .

From 2012 Riechers devoted himself almost exclusively to Class 40 and won almost all regattas in this class that year, except for the Transat Quebec - St. Malo (2nd place) and the World Championships (3rd place). In 2013, Jörg Riechers entered the IMOCA ( Open 60 ) class to prepare for the Barcelona World Race 2014/15 and the Vendée Globe 2016. On December 31, 2014, Riechers started the Barcelona World Race with his French co-skipper Sebastien Audigane. The Barcelona World Race is a Non Stop Around the World Regatta, which is sailed in pairs on Open 60's. He finished the race in 6th place after a time of 105 days, 23 hours, 35 minutes and 22 seconds. In 2017 he and designer Etienne Bertrand built a Mini 6.50 in a record time of only 7 weeks, with which he finished second in the Mini Transat 2017 and achieved the best German result of all time in this race. In 2018 Riechers continued to successfully sail the Mini 6.50 and came third in the French one-handed championship.
