The Barcelona World Race is a high seas regatta around the world for sailboats with two-man teams, so it belongs to so-called two - handed sailing . The route leads from Barcelona (Spain) around the world and back to Barcelona without stopping and without the help of third parties, which corresponds to a distance of 25,000 nautical miles . The world is circled eastward (i.e. in the direction faster due to winds and currents) and accordingly, after passing the Strait of Gibraltar, the Cape of Good Hope , Cape Leeuwin and Cape Horn is left on port and the Antarctic is left on starboard . In addition, at least 2010/11, virtual “gates” (routes between certain coordinates) were set which had to be passed. As a result, the route was determined more precisely and, for example, prevented the boats from shortening too far into the dangerous south while circumnavigating the Antarctic.

The race is on boats of Class Open 60  - d. H. 60  feet long monohulls in accordance with IMOCA guidelines. It has taken place in the three-year tour since 2007/08 and starts in November or December.

Despite the basic "non-stop" and "no-assistance" character of the regatta, the boats are allowed to make intermediate stops in ports and to accept help (or spare parts) for repairs without being disqualified. Until they pass the Cape of Good Hope (regatta 2010/11), the boats are only punished for stopping by the loss of time - due to the call at the port and the time spent there. After passing the cape, boats calling at a port may not leave the port again before 48 hours at the earliest (time penalty). For example, the eventual winner 2010/11 first went to Brazil for necessary repairs (pure loss of time) and then New Zealand (loss of time and time penalty).
