Michel Desjoyeaux (born July 16, 1965 in Concarneau ) is a French professional sailor who is one of the best single-handed sailors in the world. His numerous race victories include the double victory in the one-handed regatta around the world, the Vendée Globe in 2000/2001 and 2008/2009 . He was able to win the French one-handed regatta Solitaire du Figaro three times (1992, 1998, 2007) . In total, he won more than 25 regattas. His nickname is "the professor".

Desjoyeaux is the son of Henri Desjoyeaux, who started out as one of the first sailing instructors at Les Glénans and later laid the foundations of today's marina and sailing training center in La Forêt-Fouesnant (see below). Michel Desjoyeaux and his five siblings therefore had the opportunity to sail from an early age. Michel was later trained by Éric Tabarly and took part in 1985 with Tabarly on the Côte-d'Or for the first time at the age of 20 in a circumnavigation as part of the Whitbread Round the World Race (today: Volvo Ocean Race).

Since 1990 Desjoyeaux has mainly competed in one-handed regattas, sailing both 60-foot monohulls and 60-foot trimarans (such as the Géant ). In 1990 he also won the TwoSTAR , a transatlantic regatta for two sailors, with skipper Jean Maurel .

In May 2007 Desjoyeaux 'new boat Foncia of the boat class Open 60 was launched ; it is named after the French financial group Foncia , which sponsors Desjoyeaux's team. When Desjoyeaux was first used, he set a new regatta record for monohulls at Record SNSM ( Saint-Nazaire - Saint-Malo ) in June 2007 ; Later that year Desjoyeaux won the 2007 Transat Jacques Vabre on the boat . In 2008/2009 he sailed the boat to victory in the Vendée Globe. In 2009 he then won the Istanbul Europe Race stage regatta from Istanbul via Nice and Barcelona to Brest (Brittany) . The boat was later sold to the Spaniards Iker Martínez and Xabi Fernández, who sailed it to second place in the Barcelona World Race 2010/11 under the name Mapfre . At this point Desjoyeaux had already had the next boat constructed (launched September 20, 2010) and again baptized it with the name Foncia .

Desjoyeaux lives and trains in La Forêt-Fouesnant in Brittany, where the French national training center for long-distance sailing competitions is located in the Marina Port-la-Forêt, which his father (co) founded . Michel Desjoyeaux is married and has three children.
